UPDATE: Providence officer accused of obstruction suspended, department recommending termination

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A Providence police officer has been indicted for obstruction of justice in Providence County Superior Court, according to the office of Rhode Island Attorney General Peter F. Neronha.

Alexander Caraballo, 30, is charged with two counts of obstruction of fellow Providence Police officers in the execution of duty, two counts of obstruction of justice of the Sixth Division District Court and one count of obstruction of justice of the Providence County Superior Court.

According to Providence Officials, Caraballo has been suspended without pay, and Providence Police Chief Colonel Oscar Perez Jr. has recommended termination of employment.

In July 2023, the Office of Professional Responsibility was informed of allegations against an unidentified Providence Police officer who allegedly distributed sensitive law enforcement information with convicted felons and gang members.

After 14 months of investigation, Caraballo was positively identified for the case.

On Sept. 19, Caraballo turned himself into Superior Court.

Caraballo pled not guilty and was released on $20,000 surety bail.

Colonel Perez made the following statement:

It is my expectation that Providence Police officers conduct themselves at the highest professional standards and constantly work to build trust within the communities that we serve. We fully expect each of our officers to not transgress any criminal laws will always hold officers accountable for actions that are not reflective of the high standards of our police department. The department is working closely with the Attorney General to ensure that justice is served.

Caraballo’s pre-trial conference will be held on Oct. 28 in Providence County Superior Court.
