Providence police identify suspect in city’s 10th homicide of the year

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Providence police have identified the 41-year-old suspect accused of killing 57-year-old Michael Ames.

Michael Shaw is being charged with murder after 57-year-old Michael Ames was found dead inside of a multi-family home on Westminster St. Wednesday morning.

“Any chief in this nation knows that any homicide is one too many. We do what we can to prevent and mitigate the violence that occurs in the city,” said Chief Oscar Perez.

According to Perez, Ames was found with traumatic injuries.

ABC6 News saw detectives going in and out of a basement apartment throughout the day.

Providence resident Mark Danvers said he was in the area has police responded.

“I saw a whole lot of cops, street was blocked off, no car could go in either direction and I’m like well, what the hell has happened now?” said Danvers. “Hopefully there’s not another crime in this area.”

Shaw is expected to be arraigned in 6th District Court Thursday morning.

Police still haven’t said what led up to the murder or exactly how Ames was killed.

“My heart goes out to the family, it is the 10 homicide of the city, like I always said its unfortunate that with impulsivity and anger sometimes we end up with a homicide, my heart goes out to the family,” said Perez.
