Justice Department to monitor voting compliance in multiple Rhode Island cities

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — United States Attorney Zachary Cunha said the US Justice Department will monitor compliance with federal voting rights laws in Pawtucket, Providence, and Woonsocket on Election Day.

Cunha said the department regularly deploys its staff to monitor for compliance with federal civil rights laws in elections in communities across the country.

Monitors will include Justice Department personnel, who will contact state and local election officials as needed throughout the day.

The Justice Department and United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Rhode Island settled a voting rights lawsuit between themselves and the City of Pawtucket in May.

The alleged that Pawtucket failed to provide election assistance and materials in Spanish for Spanish-speaking voters with limited English proficiency, which certain jurisdictions are required to provide.

In addition, the voting rights group Common Cause Rhode Island notified the city to prepare for the election due to the prior lawsuit.

Cunha said that anyone who sees violations of federal voting rights laws on Election Day can report it to Civil Rights Division personnel, by calling 800-253-3931, or online.
