PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Stayed tuned for the latest updates for the 2024 Presidential Election. ABC 6 will update as more information becomes available.
LIVE UPDATES:
4:30 p.m.: Kamala Harris tells nation to accept election results and urges the supporters to keep fighting. “We will engage in a peaceful transfer of power,” Harris said.
4:20 p.m.: U.S. Senator Reed and other Rhode Island officials respond to the 2024 Presidential Election result.
3:00 p.m.: Two out of five ballot questions were rejected in Massachusetts based off unofficial 2024 ballot question results.
2:00 p.m.: Cranston Mayoral candidate Robert Ferri congratulates Mayor Ken Hopkins on his reelection.
Ferri released the following statement:
Though we did not get the outcome we were hoping for, I am proud of the campaign we ran focused on the most pressing issues facing the people of Cranston. I wish Mayor Hopkins success in developing a plan to address the city’s budget deficit and ensure the city has the resources to improve services and infrastructure that is overdue for investments and repair.
The people of Cranston have spoken. It is clear the presidential campaign had a large effect on who showed up to vote in our state this year. I hope that as we look forward to a new federal administration, the Mayor and City Councilors of both parties work together to address the issues facing the people of Cranston, even if that means working past partisan lines periodically to do what is in the best interest of Cranston’s residents.
I congratulate Mayor Hopkins.
12:38 p.m.: The Rhode Island Board of Elections released the unofficial 2024 ballot question results.
12:00 p.m.: ABC 6’s Kaitlin Gehlhaus is live from the New England for Trump store on Post Road in Warwick as supporters react to his win.
11:37 a.m.: Vice President Kamala Harris is set to speak at 4 p.m. following her loss to former President Donald Trump.
11:19 a.m.: Congressman Gabe Amo (D) releases the following statement on the results of the 2024 presidential election:
“We saw Americans participate in the sacred exercise of democracy by voting in a free and fair election. I hoped to turn the page on the divisiveness we heard and saw to suppor
t an agenda focused on unifying our country and securing economic opportunity for all to thrive. While I am disappointed by the results of the presidential election, my hand remains extended to serve Rhode Islanders in Congress. Today is a day of reflection, but tomorrow, we get back to work. Our nation’s leaders will need to move forward with the intensity of our convictions to strengthen our democracy, protect our freedoms, and have an inclusive future.”
6:41 a.m.: Representative Seth Magaziner responds to Trump’s win in a statement:
“The voters have spoken, and while I am disappointed by the results of the Presidential election, I respect the electoral process and the choice of the American people. I will work with any administration of either party when it is in the best interest of Rhode Islanders. But I also know that Rhode Islanders expect their representatives in Congress to always stand up to the executive branch when necessary to defend our democracy, rights, and freedoms. No matter what lies ahead, I am committed to fighting for Rhode Island values in Washington.”
5:30 a.m.: After winning Wisconsin, Former President Donald Trump is elected as the 47th president of the United States.
5:00 a.m.: For Rhode Island races: With 98% reported so far
- Sheldon Whitehouse (D) has claimed victory over Patricia Morgan (GOP) for U.S. Senate.
- Representative Gabe Amo (D) has claimed victory over Allen Waters (GOP) for Representative for District 1 in Congress.
- Representative Seth Magaziner (D) has claimed victory over Steven Corvi (GOP) for Representative for District 2 in Congress.
For Rhode Island mayoral races
- With 100% reporting, Mayor Donald Grebien has received 65% of the vote, over Nathan Luciano, with 34.2% of the vote.
- With 100% reporting, Mayor Christopher Beauchamp has received 51.2% of the vote, over Council President John Ward, with 47.8%.
- With 100% reporting, Mayor Ken Hopkins has received 51.6% of the vote, over Robert Ferri with 48.1% of the vote.
- With 100% reporting, Mayor Jeff Mutter has received 58.5% of the vote, over Brad Dean with 41.3% of the vote.
- With 91% reporting, Mayor Frank Picozzi has received 72.5% of the vote, over Leah Ann Hazelwood with 19.7%, and Patrick Maloney, with 7.5%.
For Massachusetts races: With 90% reported so far
- Senator Elizabeth Warren (D) has received 60.3% of the vote, over John Deaton, with 39.7% of the vote.
- Representative Bill Keating (D) has received 56.5% of the vote, over Dan Sullivan, with 43.5% of the vote.
4:45 a.m.: For Massachusetts ballot questions: With 88% percent reported so far
- Question 1- 71.5% have approved auditor’s authority to review certain non-core legislative functions
- Question 2- 58.9% have approved eliminating MCAS as a requirement to graduate
- Question 3- 54% have approved allowing rideshare drivers to unionize
- Question 4- 56.8% have rejected legalizing psychedelics
- Question 5- 63.8% have rejected increasing the minimum wage for tipped workers and allowing tip pooling for non-management employees, keeping it as it is.
4:45 a.m.: For Rhode Island ballot questions: With 92% percent reported so far
- Question 1 – 62% have rejected a constitutional convention
- Question 2 – 59.2% have approved $160.5 million in bonds for facility improvements at URI/RIC
- Question 3 – 65.52% have approved $120 million to increase housing and community opportunity at URI/RIC
- Question 4 – 67.25% have approved $53 million for environmental and recreational projects
- Question 5 – 56.12% have approved $10 million to improve arts and cultural facilities
4:45 a.m.: Republicans have won control of the U.S. Senate, retaking the chamber for the first time in four years.
4:30 a.m.: The Associated Press has called battleground states Georgia, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania for former President Donald Trump. Nevada, Arizona, Alaska, Michigan, Maine, and Wisconsin are still waiting to be called. Trump leads in five states, with Harris leading in Maine. Trump claims victory over Harris. He has secured 51.1% of the popular vote, or 267 electoral vote, with Vice President Kamala Harris securing 47.7%, or 224 electoral votes. 270 are needed to win.
11:00 p.m.: Mayor Brett Smiley (D) and Senate candidate Patricia Morgan (R) react to election results as they roll in.
10:24 p.m.: ABC 6 Political Correspondent and Providence College Political Science Professor Adam Myers gives his insights on the status on the election. Myers said it looks like Trump will win Georgia and North Carolina, and if Trump wins the sunbelt states, that Harris will need Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin. However, it is still early and no battleground states have been called.

8:30 p.m.: Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) have been projected to win re-election of the Senate.

8:00 p.m.: Kamala Harris has been projected to win Rhode Island and Massachusetts by the Associated Press.

6:30 p.m.: According to an Associated Press survey, the economy and immigration were the top issues facing voters.
6:00 p.m.: The Portsmouth Democratic Party responded to Senate candidate Patricia Morgan’s accusation of “defaced sample ballots” being given to voters.
The party said the materials were actually voters guides that were smaller than actual ballots, and that many parties and candidates use them to give to voters.
4:30 p.m.: Polls close in just hours as millions of Americans make their choice for President after a long campaign.
4:00 p.m.: Senate candidate Patricia Morgan has made accusations of voter fraud dealing with alleged “defaced sample ballots” in Portsmouth.
Morgan accused State Rep. Michelle McGaw of handing out the ballots outside a polling place. Both the Secretary of State’s Office and Board of Elections said the alleged ballots are not official ballots.
3:30 p.m.: A man was arrested by Coventry police for allegedly “causing a disturbance” at a polling place.
The man was accused of being confrontational to voters and polling staff. He was charged with disorderly conduct.
3:15 p.m.: ABC 6 Chief Meteorologist Geoff Bansen said the temperature is on track to tie with Election Day 1936.

7:00 a.m.: Massachusetts Voter Turnout from Secretary of the Commonwealth:
- 33.8% of registered voters have returned their ballots
- Vote by mail: 1,143,419
- Early voting: 597,029
- Total ballots cast: 1,740,448
