ATF urges security measures at houses of worship following arson attacks in Southern New England
FRANKLIN, Mass. (WLNE) — The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is urging houses of worship in Southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island to be on alert following recent arson attacks.
In the past six months, houses of worship in Franklin, Kingston, and Woonsocket have been targeted.
AFT is advising all houses of worships in the area, in collaboration with law enforcement, to take enhance security measures to protect their congregation and facilities, and to restrict facility access during off-hours when areas of the building are unmonitored, to minimize potential risks.
Franklin fire and police personnel responded to the fire at St. Mary’s Catholic Church back in October.
The fire was quickly knocked down and extensive ventilation was required due to the heavy smoke.
Based on investigation, witness interviews and other evidence, officials believe that the fire was intentionally set.
