Council elects new mayor for Newport
NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — There’s a new mayor for the city of Newport.
Councilor Charles Holder Jr. was the winner of the city council election-at-large seat, winning 4,733 of the votes.
He was elected to be the new mayor of Newport for the 2024-2026 term last night.
In a Facebook post, now former Mayor Xay Khamsyvoravong said that over the past two years, he’s went “beyond the floor of the ceremonial job description for Newport’s Mayor and used it as a platform to make big changes to help Newporters.”
“In the face of difficult decisions, I have consistently and knowingly chosen progress for Newport over personal political convenience. That’s just who I am,” he said.
“Charlie Holder is a good friend and colleague and he has the Council-Elect’s support for Chair. He has my full support and I look forward to returning to the Council for another two years to help Newporters,” he continued.
