EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)- The East Providence Police Department announced the debut of a program where officers will wear cameras and also have cameras in their cars.

Starting on March 16, six patrol officers and supervisors will begin wearing body cameras for a trial period of three to four months.

The program’s goal is to increase the transparency between officers and the community in which they serve.

During the trial period, officers will test the effectiveness of the cameras from a few different companies.

The department has implemented a “working policy” to protect the privacy of community members.
