New Bedford fire extended from first floor to roof

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — The New Bedford Fire Department said a structure fire on Nelson Street extended from the first floor to the roof of the building.
The fire occurred around 5 a.m. at a building that housed six apartments.
The department said the fire was able to be mostly contained to the first floor apartment it started in, and that it was prevented from reaching the attic.
The fire displaced twelve adults and three children, while one cat was rescued and another died.
There were no injuries.
