Rhode Island Blood Center declares blood emergency

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island Blood Center (RIBC) has declared a blood emergency following a more than 20% decline in donations after Thanksgiving, according to a release.

The RIBC is urgently appealing for donations of all blood types, particularly Type O, which is vital for trauma and emergency care.

“The holiday season is historically a challenging period for blood donations, as family gatherings, travel, and busy schedules cause a significant drop in donor turnout,” the release stated.

“At the same time, the demand for blood often rises due to an increase in travel-related accidents, routine surgeries, and other emergencies.”

RIBC has encouraged new and returning donors to schedule an appointment and prioritize blood donation this holiday season.

According to the RIBC, blood donors can give every 56 days, and platelet donors can give twice per month.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently lifted several blood donor eligibility restrictions.
