MassDOT to permanently close Corey Street U-turn in Fall River

FALL RIVER, Mass. (WLNE) — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation announced the Corey Street U-turn in Fall River will permanently close, and will be replaced with a multi-modal urban boulevard.

On Dec. 5, MassDOT will close the U-turn and begin construction of the permanent Davol Street northbound and Brightman Street.

Construction will take place Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m, and detours will occur around-the-clock until April 2025.

MassDOT said it is redesigning the area due to limited access between neighborhoods and the waterfront, as well as a lack in bike accommodations.

The new multi-modal boulevard is expected to to connect neighborhoods to the Taunton River, promote economic growth, and improve mobility.

To cross the area of the Corey Street U-turn, MassDOT said drivers should use the detours below.

    • Continue on Davol Street northbound and Route 79 northbound for about 1 mile
    • Take the North Main Street/North Fall River Exit
    • Take a left onto North Main Street and continue north for about 0.2 miles
    • Take a right onto the Route 79 South on-ramp to Newport/Providence RI
    • Continue on Route 79 southbound and Davol Street southbound for about 1.2 miles
    • Continue to your destination
  • Davol Street soutbound to Davol Street northbound
    • Proceed south on Davol Street
    • Turn left onto President Avenue
    • Turn left again onto Davol Street northbound
    • Continue to your destination
