Police: Cranston fire no longer considered ‘suspicious’

CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — Officials said that a fire this morning on Park Avenue in Cranston is no longer considered to be suspicious.

According to Chief Michael Winquist, Cranston firefighters and police said they responded to a reported structure fire just before 4 a.m.

Upon arrival, officials found two cars on each side of the residence on fire.

Firefighters were able to safely evacuate all residents of the home.

Preliminary investigation by the Cranston Fire Department determined the fires were suspicious.

However, just before noon police said it was later determined upon further investigation that someone had removed embers from a fireplace and placed them in a container outside.

The incident is still under investigation.
