East Providence police arrest 2 after multi-state pursuit

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Two men were arrested in East Providence on Wednesday night after a multi-state pursuit.

According to officials, 29-year-old Devonte Bonds and 19-year-old Matthew Garcia were charged and taken into custody after East Providence police spotted their vehicle exiting I-195 west onto Broadway.

Police had been notified about a pursuit by Massachusetts State Police that had been terminated at the Rhode Island state line.

Officials said they initiated a felony car stop, in which Garcia allegedly fled on foot, while Bonds was taken into custody.

Bonds was charged with felony drug possession of 69 Xanax pills.

After a brief foot chase, Garcia was located and apprehended by East Providence officers.

He was charged with obstruction and resisting arrest.

Police in Massachusetts will also have criminal charges.
