Festive events bring holiday cheer to Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Providence community came together Friday evening to celebrate the annual lighting of the City Hall Christmas Tree.

The lighting featured performances of from the 18 Wheelers Acapella Group from Wheeler School, the Lillian Feinstein Sackett Street Choir, the Providence Drum Troupe, and the cast of Trinity Repertory Theater’s A Christmas Carol.

“All of us are coming together to celebrate our capital city, all of us are coming together understanding that now more than ever we need joy, and love, and laughter,” Providence Director of Art, Culture, and Tourism Joe Wilson, Jr. said.

Santa was also in attendance and spoke to ABC 6 about the event.

“I’m thrilled to kick-off the holiday season with our annual Christmas tree lighting and bring our community together to share in the festive spirit,” Mayor Brett Smiley said.

The festivities continued at the Providence Performing Arts Center, with Mannheim Steamroller performing a suite of Christmas classics.

ABC 6 was in attendance and captured part of the performance.
