‘Wreaths Across America’ celebrates veteran awareness and appreciation

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The “Annual Wreaths Across America State House Ceremony” kicked off a full week of events designed to raise awareness and appreciation for the sacrifices of the nation’s veterans and their families.

On Monday, the “Wreath Laying Ceremony” began at noon with special guests and officials honoring America’s veterans.

“We can never honor them the way they have honored us with their sacrifice and service, but we can endeavor to try,” Rhode Island Secretary of State Gregg Amore said.

“Wreaths Across America” was held at state houses across the country, primarily focusing on veteran’s families during the holiday season.

“When it comes to veterans, is for us not to lose sight on the fact that it is our community, and our citizens, and our families that actually do the hard work to actually create people that become veterans,” Rhode Island National Guard Major General Christopher Callahan said.

At the end of the ceremony, a gold star family placed a wreath in the Garden of Heroes on the lawn outside of the Rhode Island State House.

“For Rhode Island, it’s really important because we do everything we can to make sure we never forget,” Governor Dan McKee said. “The reason we have our freedoms that we enjoy is because of those who served and defend our freedom.”
