Bristol taking steps to regain money allegedly defrauded by California man

BRISTOL, R.I. (WLNE) — The Town of Bristol said that it is taking steps for restitution of the money that was allegedly defrauded by a California man.

Alec Tahir Baker of Corona, California, was accused of using a phishing scam to defraud multiple entities, including the town, of a total of $9 million .

The United State’s Attorney’s Office said that $310,500 was wired from the town.

The town added that $250,000 has still been uncollected.

“The town is pursuing remedies, including restitution, in the ongoing criminal case,” Town Administrator Steven Contente said. “Potential civil action against the banking institution and others will help to recover the remaining funds.”

The case is being investigated by multiple entities, including the Bristol Police Department and the FBI.
