Brockton fire captain dies from occupational cancer

BROCKTON, Mass. (WLNE) — A Brockton Fire Department captain died from occupational cancer on New Year’s Day, according to the Brockton Fire Department.

Captain Stephen Monteiro worked the Campello section of Brockton along with the east side and recently took command of the Fire Alarm and Communication Division.

Monteiro, who worked his way up to the position of captain after joining the department in 1999, started cancer treatments two years ago and returned to full duty.

He was being treated again at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and died peacefully surrounded by family and members of Local 144.
