Correctional officers evacuated from Moran for cell filled with smoke

CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — Correctional officers are being evaluated Wednesday morning after a code red situation led to inmate evacuation at Cranston’s Moran medium security prison.

According to Rhode Island Department of Corrections Chief of Information JR Ventura, that code red was called at 8 p.m. Tuesday night.

Cranston firefighters were called to a cell that had filled with smoke after an electrical outlet was tampered with.

Ventura said medical personnel checked some correctional officers for smoke exposure.

There is no word if inmates were checked as well.

Ventura says there were no reported injuries.
