Super Nicholas’ mission to help other tiny superheroes

COVENTRY, R.I. (WLNE-TV)— You’ve heard of Batman, Spider-Man, and Captain America, but what about Super Nicholas? Wearing a special cape, the Coventry boy is able to fight his super villain: cystic fibrosis.

“[The cape] makes me strong and brave,” he said.

Nicholas is part of a special squad of tiny superheroes. Each member is given a hand sewn cape with powers. He uses his abilities to gain the upper hand on his symptoms.

“I never imagined that was what it was. I always knew there was something more that was going on with him but I didn’t expect it to be that,” said Jennifer O’Neill, Nicholas’ mother.

Nicholas has been sick on and off since he was a baby, but was only diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. The inherited life threatening disorder damages the lungs and digestive system.

“Watching him go through all the testing and all the doctors appointments you can possibly imagine to figure out what was going on was very difficult,” she said.

Looking for a way to comfort him, Nicholas’ Mom went online where she connected with ‘Tiny Superheroes’. Since Nicholas idolizes superhero characters she thought it would be a good fit and nominated him for a cape. It’s been by his side since the day it arrived. He even slept with it during a recent hospital stay and proudly wore it as he was discharged.

“I feel like he goes into a different mode when he wears the cape,” said O’Neill. “He feels stronger.”

Now that he’s feeling up to it, Super Nicholas is ready for his next mission. He’s hoping to empower other extraordinary kids as they over come their illnesses or disability.

“You’re brave, just like me,” said Nicholas as a message to all the other boys and girls who are showing courage as they fight their battles.

For every 30 dollars raised another tiny super hero will get their cape. Super Nicholas’ goal is to pay for 20 by this weekend since Saturday is national superhero day.
