Roof of church caves in after fire in Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A fire ripped through a church in Providence Wednesday.

Firefighters had been working at the corner of Elmwood Avenue and Greenwich Street since 10:45 a.m. at Impact Center Providence Church, and were still putting out hotspots as of 4 p.m.

Crews arrived to heavy smoke and fire on the first and second floors of the building, and had to help one person evacuate before having to back out due to the strong flames.

The roof of the building also caved in, and neighboring buildings were evacuated as a safety protocol.

Officials said they did not believe anyone else was in the building at the time of the fire and there were no injuries reported.

Firefighters cleared the scene around 5:30 p.m.

Greenwich Street will remain closed temporarily while Rhode Island Energy crews secure the area.

A GoFundMe has also been started to restore the church, which can be found here.
