‘Targeted federal immigration action’ occurs in Newport

NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — The City of Newport said that a “targeted federal immigration action” took place in the city Wednesday.

Director of Communications Thomas Shevlin said that the incident occurred near Thames Street and Cotton Court and “focused on a single individual rather than a widespread operation.”

The Newport Police Department said the individual was connected to “criminal offenses.”

Federal authorities did not participate in other immigration related law enforcement activities in the city on Wednesday, according to Newport police.

President Donald Trump’s new administration has promised to “drastically increase deportations,” and the president has said he will open a facility on Guantanamo Bay to hold certain deportees.

This is a developing story and will be updated when more information becomes available.
