Skating Club of Boston continues to mourn loss of 6 members in fatal plane crash

NORWOOD, Mass. (WLNE) — The grieving process continued as the Skating Club of Boston lost six of its cherished members in the deadly plane crash in Washington D.C.

“I think it is sinking to everybody that this is reality and that we are not going to see these folks again,” CEO Doug Zeghibe said.

Two young athletes, Jinna Han of Mansfield and Spencer Lane of Barrington, their mothers, and two coaches at the club were all killed in the crash.

“We not just lost a student, we lost a child,” Skating Club of Boston High Performance Director Olga Ganicheva said.

Jinna Han’s figure skating coach of four years said Jinna spent most of her time at the club and they shared a phone call right before the flight took off to D.C.

“With Jinna, she was bright and happy,” Ganicheva said. “She makes us smile and laugh everyday. She was the one who would come into the building and say hello, how is your day?”

On Friday, the high-performance group of skaters, which  Han was a part of, was already back out on the ice.

“I want to cry and then I am like stop, you have to be an example,” Ganicheva said.

Zeghibe said the club has been offering ways for the figure skating community to come and grieve.

“It’s hosting opportunities, having occasions at the club where we encourage people to come in and share and just feel each other’s company,” Zeghibe said. Based on yesterday’s event, it really worked. Members came from across time, from many decades of membership, to be a part of it.”
