LINCOLN, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island State Police announced the arrest of a former lawyer who voluntarily admitted to embezzling over $1.2 million from clients.

Vincent J. Mitchell, 57, surrendered to State Police on Monday, and was charged with 10 counts of Embezzlement and Fraudulent Conversion over $100.

“He had taken $1,207,233 from 10 clients for unauthorized personal use,” said Laura Meade Kirk, Director of Public Information at Rhode Island State Police.

Mitchell had been disbarred from his Warwick practice in the summer of 2017 after admitting the theft voluntarily to the Rhode Island Supreme Court Chief Disciplinary Counsel. Soon after the admittance, Rhode Island State Police began investigating.

The Coventry native’s practice focused on estate planning and long-term healthcare planning.

Mitchell was arraigned on Monday and was released on $100,000 personal recognizance.

No further information is available at this time.
