ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WLNE) — One suspect is still at large and 2 people are in custody after a burglary in Attleboro and brief pursuit on I-95 early Saturday morning.

Duct tape hangs from the lock on the front door of South Side Variety in Attleboro a few hours after 3 people broke into the store.

"They did quite a bit of damage," says Dawank Patel, whose family owns the store.

It happened around 4 in the morning.

The business owners were immediately notified by their security company.

"We look at our cameras on our phones from home and we see 3 intruders, 1 by the door and 2 going behind the counter and basically right when we saw that my mom and another employee left directly to come here and I left a few minutes behind them," says Patel.

By the time they got there the suspects and the police were gone.

"Between the time span when my mom was coming here, which is about 8 minutes, the cops were chasing them," says Patel.

Lt. Detective Timothy Cook with the Attleboro Police Department says it was a short pursuit on I–95. The suspects crashed a stolen car right by exit 3. Two men were hurt in the crash, arrested and treated at the hospital. Police say the third suspect ran off.

"It’s sad to see that people still do this in this day and age even with all the technology knowing they can still get caught," says Patel.

The burglars broke the front and back door and the fence behind the store.

The break in didn’t slow down business and the Patel family will be getting back the stolen cigarettes and cash.

"When customers are coming in and asking for things and like since the robbers took it, it’s good to get it back," says Patel.

This break in happened just 1 week before the business moves locations. They’ll be working to improve their security.
