Newport police: Driver struck pedestrian after behind the wheel medical emergency
NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — A Middletown woman suffered a medical emergency while driving Wednesday morning, causing her to veer off the road and strike a pedestrian on Connell Highway, according to Newport police.
The incident occurred at 6:30 a.m. when the 50-year-old driver struck a 58-year-old Newport man who was walking on an adjacent bike path.
The pedestrian sustained significant injuries and was transported to Rhode Island Hospital and remains in serious condition.
The driver was taken to Newport Hospital for evaluation where she is in stable condition.
No charges are being filed at this time as the investigation into this incident continues.
