Yarmouth, M.A. (WLNE)  – The K–9 Officer, Nero, who was shot in the line of duty is doing well in recovery, but his injuries will take months to heal.

Doctors at the Cape Cod Veterinarian Specialists say the bullet entered under his jaw, came through the trachea, through the esophagus and then landed on the other shoulder.

The two-year-old dog was with Officer Sean Gannon when they were both shot. Officer Gannon was did not survive.

While the community and the Yarmouth Police Department continues to mourn the loss of Officer Gannon, Nero’s recovery is providing much hope and relief for a community dealing with heartbreak.

Louisa Rahilly, of Cape Cod Veterinary Specialist says the biggest struggle for Nero is arrhythmia, but it is common after a shock, but she says he is improving.

“After seeing Nero and his recovery and having just a few moments with him I walked out there better than when I walked in all I hope is that Nero comes back with a full recovery because it’s going to mean something to a lot of people,” said Chief Fred Fredickson of the Yarmouth Police Department.

The staff at Cape Cod Cape Cod Veterinarian Specialists has been receiving “Thank you 4 Nero Cards” as the community shows their appreciation for their work.

Thank you cards can be sent to: Cape Cod Veterinarian Specialists, 79 Theophilus Smith Road, South Dennis, MA, or 11 Bourne Bridge Approach, Buzzard’s Bay, MA 02532.
