BOSTON, MASS.— Thousands of athletes from around the world braved the elements Monday as they competed in the 122nd running of the Boston Marathon. At the finish line, their loved ones, who said despite the cold, wind and rain, there was no where else they’d rather be.

“This is my fiancé’s 5th time running. I have to say this is the worst weather I’ve experienced before,” said Claire Cox of Pennsylvania.

The less than ideal weather conditions kept the crowd size down at first. Those who did venture out early found ways to stay warm and dry. Some wore plastic bags on their shoes. Others donned ponchos or umbrellas.

“I have socks on my lap right now and I’m about to put them on my hands,” explained Catherine Waite who’s husband was running. “I’m wearing 10 long sleeve shirts right now.”

Despite their waterlogged condition while on the sidelines of the course most everyone seemed to be in good spirits.

“This is my first time seeing the Boston Marathon so I’m really excited to be here and happy for all the runners and hope they make the best of it,” said Katie Grilli who was there supporting her friends husband.
