Fall River Police warn public of department impersonation scam

FALL RIVER, Mass. (WLNE) — The Fall River Police Department said the public should be aware of a scam where the scammer pretends to represent the department.

The scammer, which uses a number that copies the department’s office phone, tells the potential victim that their options are either to surrender themselves to the Fall River Police Department for arrest, or that they may pay a fine to adjudicate the warrant.

The payment is usually asked in the form of an eGift card to be transferred to a specific account or person given by the caller.

The department said it does not call about arrest warrants and will never ask for payment.
