Smiley responds to McKee’s PPSD municipal management update

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Providence Mayor Brett Smiley is weighing in on Monday’s update regarding state intervention of the Providence Public School District.

Governor Dan McKee announced Monday that PPDS would not return to city control until at least 2026.

Mayor Smiley said he was aware of the plan, but he still believes state intervention should end by July 1.

A statement from a city spokesperson reads in part:

Most of the conditions that RIDE unveiled at yesterday’s announcement were sent to the city in September, and we responded on November 1 and again on December 11 as we made progress to meet those metrics.

The city is well on track to begin this transition and Mayor Smiley believes that the district should return to municipal management on July 1.
