Karen Read set to be retried on all previous charges after Mass. high court decision
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court has denied read’s appeal after her attorneys filed a motion with the SJC to reconsider dismissing the charges.
Read is accused of hitting and killing her boyfriend john O’Keefe with her car back in January 2022.
O’Keefe was also a Boston police officer.
During her first trial, Read’s defense argued she was framed, and other law enforcement officers were responsible for O’Keefe’s death.
Read’s first trial ended with a hung jury.
Her defense team argued that the jury had agreed Read was not guilty on some of the counts, so it should be tossed.
But, the jury was never polled.
Now, the judge has ruled she can be retried on all three charges.
Read is charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter, and leaving the scene of the crime.
Read’s second trial is scheduled to begin on April 1.
