Providence man pleads guilty to committing bank fraud using fake checks
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Acting United States Attorney Sara Miron Bloom said that a Providence man admitted in court to participating in a conspiracy to defraud banks by creating and depositing tens-of-thousands of dollars’ worth of bogus checks.
43-year-old Jarrod Smith was charged with conspiracy to commit bank fraud.
He admitted to using stolen checks to create bogus checks that were then deposited into bank accounts of individuals that he or other members of the conspiracy recruited and enticed.
After the deposits Smith or another member of the conspiracy withdrew the proceeds from the bank accounts.
The people whose accounts were used as part of the conspiracy were also paid.
Smith is scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 19.
