Man accused of kidnapping 80-year-old held without bail

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A 53-year-old man who was accused of assaulting and kidnapping an 80-year-old woman was held without bail Friday.

Steven Henning was charged with kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon in a dwelling, first degree robbery, assault on a person over 60-serious bodily injury and burglary and larceny of a motor vehicle in Coventry.

Prosecutors alleged Henning had assaulted his girlfriend in Ohio, stole several cars, and asked the 80-year-old for money before the incident where he allegedly choked her, demanded jewelry and money, and then placed the woman in her car and drove her around for some time.

He eventually left the woman in the woods and planned to bury her before she went for help.

Henning is expected back in court on March 24.
