Woman arrested by Providence police after crashing into cruiser and fleeing

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Providence Police Department said a woman was arrested after she allegedly struck a police cruiser and caused a pursuit on Feb. 23.

19-year-old Sheyla Batres was charged with operating a vehicle with unsealed alcoholic beverage, obedience to devices, operating motor vehicle without insurance, laned roadway violation, refusal to submit chemical test, driving with suspended/revoked/cancelled License – 2nd Offense, and duty in accident resulting in damage to highway fixtures.

Around 12:05 a.m. on Feb. 23, an officer was patrolling the area of Bridgham Street when they said they discovered a speeding vehicle driving in the police officer’s lane of travel.

The officer attempted to move to the right to prevent a collision, which resulted in the vehicle supposedly hitting the rear driver’s side of the police cruiser, according to Providence police.

After striking the police cruiser, the vehicle allegedly drove off at a “very high rate of speed” though multiple intersections and failed to stop at two red lights.

Eventually, Batres was arrested by Providence police.
