Providence schools controversy over removal of three non-binary teachers continues

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The controversy over the removal of three non-binary teachers from the Providence school district continues.

It was a main point of contention during Wednesday night’s school board meeting.

ESL teacher Brandy Tucker told the school board that all 17 teachers who received notice were called to meet with the Providence Caucus of Rank and File Educators, or PVD Core.

Tucker said nine of the teachers met with the caucus in person.

Of the teachers present, two are male teachers of color, and five of the nine teachers are queer.

City council president Rachel Miller sent a letter to both education commissioner Angélica Infante-Green and PPSD superintendent Dr. Javier Montanez calling for an immediate review.

The school district has already responded to the claims being made.

The superintendent sent a letter back to the city council saying PPSD is an equal opportunity employer.

Montanez says the non-renewal process is based on a state statute followed by all districts based on employee performance, discipline and attendance.
