Police shoot at suspect during operation in Middletown
MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — Officers shot at a suspect after that person hit an officer with a car Thursday, according to police.
Police taped off a crime scene at the Home Depot on West Main Road in town around 12:30 p.m.
In a release, police said members of the Drug Enforcement Administration were conducting an operation in the Home Depot parking lot.
As officers attempted to take the suspect into custody, that suspect drove into an officer, police said.
At that point, officers fired at the suspect, according to police.
The suspect then left the scene, resulting in a pursuit.
That ended when the suspect vehicle collided with a police cruiser on Ridgewood Road, police said.
The suspect, who hasn’t been identified, was taken into custody after that crash.
Police said the suspect was taken to Newport Hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The officer who police said was hit by that suspect was also taken to the hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The Attorney General’s Office, Rhode Island State Police, Middletown Police, and the Drug Enforcement Administration are all now investigating the circumstances.
