Officials fire at suspect after officer was hit by car in Middletown

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — Shots were fired by police Thursday when Drug Enforcement Administration agents attempted to make an arrest at a Home Depot in Middletown.

Two crimes scenes were established when a suspect allegedly hit an officer with a car while trying to escape on West Main Road, causing police to fire their weapons in return.

Police then pursued the suspect into a residential neighborhood, which ended when the suspect crashed into a cruiser on Ridgewood Road a half mile away, according to police.

The suspect was then taken into custody and brought to the hospital, and the officer who was hit by a car was also taken to the hospital.

Police haven’t identified the suspect nor the officer, though officials said they both suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident remains under investigation.
