NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WLNE) — Mystic Aquarium said Chappy, the gray seal pup that was found on the street in New Haven, has passed away.

On Feb. 16, Chappy began treatment at the aquarium’s Rescue Clinic after being found by the New Haven Police Department.

The aquarium said the seal pup “initially responded well to his treatment,” but his gastrointestinal issues were “too severe to treat.”

After a necropsy, findings showed Chappy had mesenteric torsion.

While unrelated to the cause of death, findings also showed small pieces of plastic in his stomach, “highlighting the threat that marine debris, especially plastics, poses to marine animals,” Mystic Aquarium said.

In a post, Mystic Aquarium said:

“The Mystic Aquarium staff are proud that they were able to give Chappy the best chance possible and are devastated by this outcome. The reality of working with stranded animals can be tough sometimes, but Chappy was surrounded by love until the very end. Thank you to everyone who has reached out with words of encouragement and support. It means so much to our team.”
