2 children rescued from Providence house fire
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Providence Fire Department said crews rescued two children from a house fire Monday night.
Around 8:30 p.m., firefighters responded to reports of a fire at a home on Ophelia Street and arrived to find several people were trapped inside.
“Once you hear reports of people trapped, things pick up a little bit,” Battalion Chief Mark Randall said.
Firefighters braved the flames to rescue two kids who were unconscious inside the home.
“One was two [years old] and one was, I believe, a little bit younger,” Randall said.
According to Providence Fire Chief Derek Silva, firefighters were able to go in and get the two children quickly despite the “heavy fire conditions.”
Both were taken to Hasbro Children’s Hospital along with their mother to be treated for smoke inhalation.
“They are conscious and doing well at Hasbro hospital at this time,” Randall said.
The fire was put out in about 40 minutes, according to Randall, who added that a couple of pets died in the fire.
While crews put out the flames, Hartford Avenue was shut down.

Neighbor Joe Pitocco said he’s lived on the street for nearly 50 years.
“You live in a neighborhood for so long, you never expect to see this happen in your neighborhood,” he said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
