Suspects in 2024 murder of seven-year-old girl facing additional charges

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — 19-year-old Amari Cabrera and 26-year-old Shameem Nathaniel are now facing additional felony charges in superior court following an indictment last week.

Cabrera and Nathaniel each face 17 felony counts, with six additional charges added as the case moves to superior court.

That includes first-degree murder and several gun charges.

Cabrera and Nathaniel are accused of shooting at a car on Florence Street back in August.

Seven-year-old Ny’Eil Pires was in the backseat with her brother when she was shot and later died at the hospital.

Officials believe the shooting stemmed from a dispute between the suspects and Ny’Eil’s father, Nelson Pires.

When the case remained in district court, prosecutors unveiled surveillance video that showed the moments leading up to the shooting.

Prosecutors say the video shows Nathaniel and Pires talking outside of a 7-Eleven.

Then Pires is seen getting into a car with his kids.

Prosecutors say additional surveillance on Florence Street shows Nathaniel and Cabrera pulled to the side of the road, and Pires pulling in behind them.

It’s unclear in the video what happens next, but prosecutors said Pires drove his car right at Nathaniel and Cabrera, and that’s when gunshots rang out.

Ny’Eil died from her injuries later at Hasbro Children’s Hospital.

Pires is facing two charges of child endangerment and a charge for driving without a license.

Both Nathaniel and Cabrera are set to appear in court today for a re-arraignment on the new felony charges in Providence Superior Court.
