Frustrated residents speak out on Rhode Island Energy rates at PUC meeting
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island Energy officials discussed gas and electric rates statewide Monday at a public meeting in Warwick, with residents voicing their frustrations.
“We do not have public utility commission hearings that generate this level of attention, and it’s become an ongoing trend because folks are being forced to spend literally 30, 40 percent of their income just on utilities alone,” said Rhode Island Representative David Morales.
“We wanted to stick to the budget that we would be able to do,” said Warwick resident Amanda Sawyer.
“Nothing’s getting better, it’s only worse. The savings that we had, I never wanted to be week to week.”
Rhode Island Energy acknowledged concerns but pointed to seasonal price changes as a factor in fluctuating rates.
Rhode Island Energy also reminded residents that they have the option to choose their own electricity supplier, though some customers may still face additional charges.
Lower rates are expected this spring.
