Middleborough crews battle fire that ‘consumed’ house and barn, injured one person

MIDDLEBOROUGH, Mass. (WLNE) — The Middleborough Fire Department said it battled a two-alarm fire that “consumed” a house and barn and injured one person on Tuesday.
Around 3 p.m., crews responded to the home on Vernon Street.
Upon arrival, firefighters found flames coming from the barn’s roof and on the exterior of the house.
Officials said the fire spread to the grass, which reached the other side of the road.
All four occupants were able to get out of the home before first responders arrived.
The Middleborough Fire Department said one man suffered second-degree burns below the waist and was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
About 35 firefighters from at least 11 fire departments battled the fire, using a rotating line of tankers to refill the portable tank since the closest fire hydrant was about a mile away, according to the Middleborough Fire Department.
Initial investigation showed the fire started outside and spread to the barn and home.
No firefighters were injured.
The Middleborough Fire Department and Massachusetts State Police are investigating the cause of the fire.
