Providence man sentenced for 2021 drive-by shooting murder
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A Providence man was sentenced Tuesday in Providence County Superior Court for his role in a 2021 drive-by shooting that left a woman dead.
According to the office of Rhode Island Attorney General Peter F. Neronha, Shawn Mann, 34, was sentenced to double life in prison plus 60 years at the Adult Correctional Institutions (ACI) on multiple charges related to the Providence incident.
Mann was found guilty on October 24, 2024 of one count of murder, one count of conspiracy to commit murder, one count of possession of a ghost gun and a bevy of other charges.
The incident occurred during the early morning hours of August 1, 2021 when Mann and co-defendant Isaiah Pinkerton participated in the drive-by shooting on Onley Street that left 24-year-old Miya Brophy-Baermann dead.
Providence police responded to reports of the shooting as rescue personnel were transporting Brophy-Baermann to Rhode Island Hospital where she was pronounced deceased.
Brophy-Baermann was not the intended target of the shooting.
Surveillance footage obtained by investigators showed a dark-colored sedan driving by the crime scene and an occupant firing a gun at Brophy-Baermann and her boyfriend Sheron Robinson.
The sedan then fled the scene.
Two 9mm cartridge casings were found on the street by investigators, as well as a fragmented bullet that was recovered from the victim’s vehicle.
During a routine traffic stop on December 12, 2021, officers located a backpack that had been thrown from the vehicle prior to the stop.
This backpack contained a ghost gun, which was determined to be a possible match to the Onley Street shooting through a National Integrated Ballistics Information Network (NIBIN) database search.
Several subsequent expert analyses of the weapon determined that the casings located at the crime scene were expelled from the ghost gun.
Investigators also utilized cell phone location data and DNA evidence in this case.
Co-defendant Isaiah Pinkerton was sentenced to double life in prison, plus 50 years on January 26, 2024.
