West Greenwich police charge driver with firearm violation, arson

WEST GREENWICH, R.I. (WLNE) — West Greenwich police arrested a man Monday on firearm and arson charges, according to a statement from the West Greenwich Police Department.

Officers conducted a traffic stop Monday on Nooseneck Hill Road after observing the driver speeding.

The unnamed driver was found to not have a valid driver’s license and the vehicle was towed.

Police learned while interviewing the driver prior to a tow inventory that he had a loaded revolver in the car, and the driver was taken into custody at this time.

The suspect was also questioned regarding a 3.5 acre brush fire in the Hopkins Hill Road, Big River Management Area that occurred prior to the traffic stop.

The suspect told police that he and friends had started a camp fire in that area earlier that day, according to police.

The suspect is charged with carrying a pistol/revolver without permit, sixth degree arson and conspiracy.

He was arraigned and released on surety bail as the investigation continues.
