Barrington Police charge suspect in scam claiming to collect money for family of plane crash victims
BARRINGTON, R.I. (WLNE) — The Barrington Police Department said it made an arrest in connection with a scam that claimed to be collecting money for the family of two victims of the Washington D.C. midair plane collision.
54-year-old Edward Lima, of Cranston, was charged with two counts of obtaining money under false pretenses under $1,500.
Police said that Lima allegedly encouraged donations to what was said to be the Barrington Police Union in honor of the Lane family.
Lima turned himself in on Feb. 7 and plead no contest on the charges.
The department said two victims of the scam were fully reimbursed, and asked anyone who believed they were victims of the scam to contact 401-437-3930.
