RI lawmakers to consider bill to cap electric and gas profits

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Lawmakers will discuss multiple bills aimed to curb Rhode Island Energy’s bills for customers Thursday.

One of the bills introduced by Rep. Megan Cotter aims to put a cap on electric and gas utilities’ profits.

Right now, the profit is determined by the public utilities commission.

RI Energy said it only controls about one-third of customer bills and the rest comes from outside energy suppliers, which is why rates fluctuate.

Rates are also seasonal, and expected to lower by April.
