Remains of Korean War POW to return home to Taunton

TAUNTON, Mass. (WLNE) — The remains of a Taunton-born Korean War prisoner of war will be returned home Wednesday.

24-year-old Private First Class Joseph Travers enlisted in the army in 1951.

He was reported missing-in-action, then several other prisoners of war reported he died.

The North Koreans returned remains from their camps in 1954.

Travers’ remains were not identified until 2024.

His remains were at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Mayor Shauna O’Connell and City of Taunton Veterans Director Ally Rodriguez will welcome his remains home to the O’Keefe-Wade Funeral Home at 4:30 p.m.
