Fall River to mark 80th anniversary of the end of Battle of Iwo Jima

FALL RIVER, Mass. (WLNE) — Fall River will honor and pay tribute to the 80th anniversary of the end of the Battle of Iwo Jima Friday morning.

The Fall River Veterans’ Service office is holding a gathering at Bicentennial Park for what is billed as “a solemn day of recognition” for the end of the battle.

The five-week battle saw some of the bloodiest fighting between U.S. forces and the Imperial Japanese Army in the Pacific Theatre.

It ended with an American victory, but the U.S. experienced 28,698 casualties.

There will be speakers at today’s hour long event, which begins at 9 a.m.
