Pawtucket man pleads guilty to defrauding $100,000 with 40 fraud SNAP cards, Treasury checks
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A Pawtucket man has pleaded guilty to defrauding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and the U.S. Treasury of more than $100,000, according to the office of Acting United States Attorney Sara Miron Bloom District of Rhode Island.
Reynaldo Martinez, 32, pleaded guilty Tuesday to two counts of conspiracy and one count each of misuse of a Social Security number and aggravated identity theft.
Martinez had been accused of obtaining 40 SNAP EBT cards by using stolen identities or stolen or fraudulent Social Security numbers.
Martinez filed SNAP benefit applications in person at multiple Rhode Island Department of Human Services locations using fraudulent driver’s licenses.
These documents used different names but all had Martinez’s own image.
He also used Social Security cards belonging to other individuals, including one deceased person.
All told, Martinez defrauded SNAP of $33,192.
Martinez also defrauded the U.S. Treasury by cashing altered Treasury checks made payable to himself.
Along with co-conspirators, Martinez obtained checks made payable to others and altered the checks to reflect the identities on fraudulent driver’s licenses.
This scheme netted Martinez a total of $79,532.
Martinez has a been convicted of multiple counts of fraud in multiple states from as early as 2012.
He served 48 months in prison for a 2017 fraud and identity theft case in Rhode Island.
Martinez will be sentenced for this most recent conviction on July 8, 2025.
