Read jury selection continues, Canton PD announces results of investigation audit
DEDHAM, Mass. (WLNE) — Two jurors have been seated Wednesday as jury selection continues in the retrial of Karen Read.
87 prospective jurors were brought in for potential service.
The court needs to seat 16 jurors, and 12 of them will end up deliberating and four will serve as alternates.
According to our ABC Boston affiliate, WCVB, Judge Beverly Cannone ruled Tuesday that the prosecution can call Judson Welcher, a bio-mechanical engineer and accident reconstructionist, as a witness.
Read is being retried for allegedly hitting and killing her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe, with a car in 2022.
Meanwhile, town officials in Canton have released the findings of an audit regarding the police department’s missteps in their investigation of O’Keefe’s death.
Among the mistakes highlighted in the report are failing to photograph O’Keefe’s body on scene before moving it, conducting interviews outside of police headquarters and not recording witnesses.
According to WCVB, that audit was conducted by private company, 5 Stones Intelligence, with the cooperation of the Canton Police Department.
5 Stones offered tips to town officials for better future investigations, such as conducting witness interviews at police headquarters, equipping all vehicles with full crime-scene kits and rewriting policy regarding the use of personal phones to document scenes.
