Karen Read’s attorneys file emergency petition for immediate stay of trial

Jury Selection To Continue In Karen Read's Second Murder Trial

DEDHAM, Mass. (WLNE) — Karen Read’s attorneys have filed an emergency petition with the U.S. Supreme Court in hopes of pausing her second trial, according to a filing obtained by ABC.

This comes as a review is pending on her claims of constitutional violation.

In the document, Read’s team claims the retrial violates the Double Jeopardy Clause because “the jury in her first trial reached a final and unanimous, but unannounced, decision that she is not guilty of [two of the three] charges.”

On April 1, jury selection began for Read’s second murder trial, with 200 potential jurors summoned.

As of Monday, 10 jurors were selected, with the court needing six more.
