Pope Francis names Most Reverend Bruce Lewandowski new Bishop of Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Pope Francis has named Most Reverend Bruce Alan Lewandowski as the 10th Bishop of Providence, according to a statement from the Diocese of Providence.

A formal announcement of his appointment will take place Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul.

Lewandowski, a Toledo, OH native, has been the Auxiliary Bishop of Baltimore, Vicar for Hispanic Catholics and Vicar for Baltimore City for the Archdiocese of Baltimore since 2020.

Lewandowski became a Redemptorist priest in 1988 and was educated at Saint Alphonsus College in Suffield, Conn., earning a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy.

In his capacity as a Redemptorist priest, Lewandowski has served throughout the United States and the world, including serving in New York City, Philadelphia, PA and Vieux Fort, Saint Lucia, West Indies.

Lewandowski will replace Bishop Richard Henning, who is now the Archbishop of Boston after the resignation of Cardinal Sean O’Malley in August.
